Sample of an Emergency Leave Letter

Emergency Sign

It is a formal letter written by an employee to his/her supervisor or HR department, requesting a leave from work due to an unforeseen situation, such as a death, illness, accident etc. You could write almost anything in this letter considering the sort of problem you are encountering.

Make sure you keep the letter concise and get straight to the point so that the reader has your attention. Secondly, get to know about the company’s leave policy and adhere to it. Moreover, since you are writing to your senior, try to keep a professional and formal tone. Lastly, in case you want to cover up for your missed time and want to work either from home or during extra shifts, simply inform about that fact in your emergency leave letter.

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to request a leave of absence from work due to an emergency at home. I have been informed that my mother was taken ill this morning and has been admitted to the Health Care Facility. She had been suffering from a severe backache over the past week, with her condition worsening today.

I am sorry for the short notice of my request, but I will need to leave work at the earliest. I have handed over the supervision of my work to Mr. Atkinson, who will keep you in the loop. In case of any query, please feel free to call me on my cell phone. I shall report back to office as soon as I can.

I hope you will understand my position and grant me a leave for today. I apologize for the inconvenience caused by my absence.

Yours faithfully,

Rodney Brown
