I am writing this letter to request a leave of absence from work due to an emergency at home. I have been informed that my mother was taken ill this morning and has been admitted to the Health Care Facility. She had been suffering from a severe backache over the past week, with her condition worsening today.
I am sorry for the short notice of my request, but I will need to leave work at the earliest. I have handed over the supervision of my work to Mr. Atkinson, who will keep you in the loop. In case of any query, please feel free to call me on my cell phone. I shall report back to office as soon as I can.
I hope you will understand my position and grant me a leave for today. I apologize for the inconvenience caused by my absence.
- Keep the letter concise and get straight to the point so that the reader has your attention.
- Make sure you are aware of the company’s leave policy and adhere to it.

Re: Emergency Leave
Respected Mrs. Amy,
I am writing to apply for an emergency leave from work for one week – March 12 2012 to March 18 2012 – to attend the funeral of my grandfather. My family lives in Florida, and they have informed me that my grandfather just passed away. I will have to go home for the above mentioned period.
I may not be able to accept calls as it is a family matter. For that reason, I have assigned Mr James to look after my work, and further keep you in touch. Sorry for any inconvenience.
My current leave balance for the year stands at 12, which will cover the duration of my leave.
